The Square Project - Installations of Coloured Squares

The work of artists is always evolving, reflecting their personalities and expressing their inner beliefs. The painter Jana Dettmer has been deeply exploring the aesthetic, psychological, and philosophical significance of colours for several years. Through her abstract works, she creates vibrant yet restrained spatial experiences. Her new complex project, modular mixtures,  is dealing with form and colour in space. The Winter Stiftung Hamburg has supported Dettmer for years and is pleased to invite you to the exhibition of her new project in Cologne from April 25 to 28, 2024.

Fascinating Moments

Dettmer experiments with techniques, breaking her own rules while maintaining her dynamic and intuitive style. Her art often revolves around pure colour, treating each piece as an independent platform and a space of illusion. Through reduction and condensation, she creates fascinating moments that inspire clarity and the search for understanding.

“With my art, I want to inspire people to keep moving and to pursue their ideas further.”

For Jana Dettmer, art is a medium that challenges self-exploration. Each of her works is created as a colour space, an energetically charged setting inviting viewers to immerse themselves and feel the impact and energy of colour. Those who pause and observe the interaction of colour within the painting and the surrounding space will encounter themselves.

The Squaring of Diversity

The square plays a central role in the creative process of the Square Project and serves as the foundation for Dettmer's project idea of MODULAR MIXTURES. With its two horizontal and two vertical lines, the square sets boundaries while simultaneously opening them. This format represents her message: the courage to pursue new paths decisively and independently.

Every colour becomes something special

Jana Dettmer combines individually created colour fields to form large, intense colour compositions. She is fascinated by the effect of these individual color fields as part of a strict order.

The creation process of a Square Project installation is complex and multi-layered. It begins with the creation of square paintings using mixed techniques and various layers  on wood. Dettmer intuitively and dynamically interprets colours, using different painting materials and tools to create vivid structures and shades, making each colour a unique. experience.

Just this initial stage leads to the reproduction of painted works, which are printed individually behind 6mm thick acrylic glass. This process creates a unique depth and intensifying shine effect. The squares behind acrylic glass are then arranged by the artist into abstract, powerful geometric grid images. With minimal spacing, she combines these individual squares into something entirely new: an installation that invites viewers to experience a diverse colour display for a constantly evolving spatial experience.
